2012/2013 Tax Rebate Deadline

The 2012/13 PAYE Tax Rebate deadline is fast approaching. Don’t miss out.

The deadline for submitting tax rebate claims for the 2012-13 tax year is April 5th 2017. If you miss it, HMRC gets to keep your tax overspend and you don’t see a penny. So not fair! Now is the time to get yourself organised and sort out your tax rebate claim.

That’s why we’re giving you a gentle shove in the right direction now – while there’s still time to do something constructive. We really don’t want you to miss out on money that legitimately belongs to you. Everyone should pay their fair share of tax, but no-one should be paying more.

2012/2013 tax year tax rebate examples

Most taxpayers fail to recoup their money because they don’t know they are entitled to claim, or they are put off by the complexities of the claiming process.

If you are employed and spend any of your own money on things for work, then you are probably owed tax relief through one of HMRC’s many tax breaks. Here are some of the most common, successful work expenses claims:

  • Mileage – when you use your own vehicle to get to different or temporary places of work
  • Subsistence – accommodation and food bills when you have to work away from home.
  • Travel – public transport like using the train for work journeys
  • Uniform – costs of washing and replacing items
  • Working from home – such as, a proportion of your household running costs
  • Membership fees – to some Trade Unions and/or professional bodies

If any of these fit your employment situation, then it’s worth checking out what you might be owed.

Strict time limit

HMRC allow work expenses tax relief claims to be backdated for 4 years. This is why the 2012-13 tax year expiration date is April 5th 2017. You can submit a claim for all tax relief from then to the current tax year all at once.

Don’t leave your own money behind

If you are like the vast majority of us, you have trouble remembering the specifics of what you did last week – never mind your employment details from 2012! You can probably remember the useful things, like Bolt’s gold-medal winning 100m sprint time, or that you proudly scoffed 5 consecutive cream scones at the Diamond Jubilee street party.

But are you sure you put in a claim for the tax rebate you are due? Of course not. That’s why there are millions of taxpayers’ pounds taxpayers in HMRC’s coffers, instead of your bank account.
