If you are a Dental Nurse who has work related costs you could be due a Dental Nurse Tax Rebate. Tax relief can be claimed on expenses and will not be received unless a claim is made.
A Dental Nurse can make a tax relief claim for the last four years, meaning the amount you receive may be quite substantial.
I Am A Dental Nurse, What Can I Claim Tax Relief For?
Expenses can be claimed against tax for the following costs:
- membership fees to professional bodies like the GDC and unions
- the cost of clothes and shoes bought for work
- Uniform laundry costs
- the cost of journeys made for work purposes (excluding commuting)
GDC Membership Fees
If you have paid for indemnity/membership to a professional body such as the British Dental Association (BDA), the General Dental Council (GDC) or the British Association of Dental Nurses (BADN) and your employer does not repay this to you, you can claim a Dental Nurses tax rebate.
It is even possible to claim tax relief on union membership, such as UNISON or the Dental Defence Union.
Clothes and Shoes
Dental nurses often have to buy their own shoes and clothes for work. If your employer has not given you an allowance for such purchases, and this uniform is only used for work, you can claim for a tax refund.
Uniform Laundry Costs
If you have clothes that are used solely for work purposes, such as clothing with your company’s logo and you wash your uniform at home you may be entitled to a tax refund for this too. If your employer does not give you any laundering services or costs usually a flat rate of £100 will be given annually.
Work Journeys
If you use your own car or spend your own money on public transport for work related journeys (aside from commuting), you can claim for tax relief for this. For example if you have to travel to different clinics and not to just one permanent location.
Usually this works by adjustments to your tax code meaning that in the future you will pay less tax.
