The 2022/2023 tax year ends on the 5 April 2023 which means you can expect a 2022/2023 P800 tax calculation to arrive from HMRC around May time.
A P800 is posted to you by HMRC and shows a breakdown of how much you earned and the income tax you paid under PAYE in that year.
It will confirm at the bottom of the page how much income tax you have overpaid and this is the value of your tax refund for the year.
Your P800 tax calculation follows on after the tax year ends on the 5 April 2023 because it takes many weeks sometimes months for all of your sources of income to send your pay and tax details to HMRC so they can update your tax record.
Reasons for being due a 2022/2023 tax rebate
There are a number of reasons why you may be owed a repayment of tax for the 22/23 tax year and will automatically receive your refund in due course.
Some common overpayment of tax reasons are:
- Your tax code has been incorrect.
- You have experienced redundancy.
- You have had multiple jobs.
- You have taken a pension lump sum.
Not all overpaid income tax will be repaid to you without you interacting in some way with the tax office.
How do I claim my 2022/2023 tax year refund?
The methods available to claim a tax rebate are becoming more accessible and easier with HMRC allowing taxpayers to request a repayment online via the HMRC app or personal tax account options.
The 2022/2023 tax calculation will tell you if you can claim what you are due online.
If you don’t make a request online for your overpaid tax online within 21 days HMRC should automatically send you a cheque within 6 weeks from the date on your calculation.
If you can’t claim your tax back online HMRC will generally send you a repayment cheque through the post around 14 days from the date on your tax calculation letter.
