Are you aware that you can claim tax relief on your membership fees to BADN?

It’s not just professional fees you can claim for there’s more.

We’ve been helping members of the BADN for many years to claim back the tax rebates they’re entitled to.

As a dental nurse you could be employed by a variety of workplaces and hold a number of different positions. You may work in General Practice, an NHS hospital, or within a community setting.

This may be full or part time and as a tutor, manager, practice manager or receptionist, as well as your more traditional role. But whatever job description applies to you, there are tax reliefs available for you to claim back.

This money will not be automatically returned to you by the Tax Office, you have to submit an official claim.

What else can a Dental Nurse claim a tax rebate for?

Many dental nurse are eligible for the following tax reliefs on work expenses:

  • Other professional bodies like the GDC (General Dental Council)
  • Union fees eg Unison
  • Shoes and tights, if your employer has not already covered this cost.
  • If your employer does not provide a facility to wash your uniforms then you are entitled to claim for the cost of laundering them yourself.
  • Any protective clothing or equipment that you have to buy yourself which is only for use at work.
  • You can claim mileage for journeys made in your own vehicle that are not part of a normal home to workplace commute. For example, visiting clients in the community.

How do I make a BADN tax rebate claim?

To make your BADN tax rebate claim you will normally need to complete a P87 form which is then submitted to HMRC (the tax office).

You have the option to claim for your BADN membership fee and any additional expenses through either online or postal methods provided by the tax office.

The process of claiming tax relief for your BADN membership fee depends on whether or not you are required to complete a self assessment tax return in the year in which you make the claim.

BADN tax refund using P87: In cases where dental nurses are not required to file a tax return they should fill in HMRC form P87.

The P87 form can be filled out online or downloaded and sent via mail to HMRC. It is worth noting that one P87 form allows for claims spanning up to four consecutive tax years, which is good if you need to file multiple years’ worth of BADN rebate claims.

After submitting your claim, anticipate receiving a response from HMRC along with any entitled tax rebate within approximately eight to twelve weeks.

HMRC typically repays refunds into the bank account specified on your P87 form or issues a cheque accordingly.

If you require assistance you can directly contact HMRC and they will provide guidance.

BADN tax rebate through self assessment: To necessitate completing a tax return or having an alternative reason such like rental income individuals must have employment expenses amounting to £2500 or more.

For those who do file a tax return include the value of your BADN fees alongside other eligible expenses in your tax return.
