The NMC have announced that over 75% of their members are not claiming their tax relief. This applies to Nurses working in both the NHS and private sector.
To try to alleviate being £8 million in the red, the Nursing and Midwifery Council hiked its annual registration fee from £76 to £100 in February 2013. The Chief Executive and Registrar, Jackie Smith, said, “..we recognise that the fee increase has increased the financial burden on nurses and midwives…” and encouraged everyone to claim the tax relief they are eligible for.
But the NNMC’s survey of 564 members discovered that only 24% of their members were making the necessary claim applications. Mind you, this is hardly surprising as only 40% actually knew that they were entitled to claim!
What other tax rebates can NMC members claim?
Under tax regulations, Nurses and other healthcare workers are allowed to reclaim the tax relief on:
- Membership to Professional bodies that they must belong to in order work in that field like the RCN.
- Washing your own work uniform
- Traveling in the course of your work (for example in the community)
HMRC have many such work expenses tax reliefs available to taxpayers and want to return, what is essentially, these tax overspends.
Bodies like NMC cannot make claims for their members though. Individuals must communicate directly with the Tax Office. This is part of NMC advice to its members, basically meaning you need to make a claim or you won’t get what you are entitled to.
Jackie Smith expressed surprise that so few of the NMC’s members are “receiving what they are entitled to” and encourages all members to make their claims.
