Online Tax Rebate FAQs

What can I claim a tax rebate for?

The list is long. The cost of uniform washing, professional fees, and travel are just some of what you can claim tax relief on. It’s best to get in touch so we can review your position to make sure you don’t miss out.

I wear a uniform for work, what am I claiming for?

HMRC allows tax relief to be claimed on the cost of taking care of a work uniform or protective clothing.

Most trades and professions can reclaim a higher allowance, meaning you get more money back. Our service will make sure these are claimed so you don’t miss out.

For tax purposes what is classed as a uniform?

The uniform needs to be something you wear that is obviously worn for work. An example is a uniform worn by a Nurse or Policeman. Some uniforms are less noticeable than others, but this doesn’t matter. Your still entitled to claim even if you wear a polo shirt with your company badge on it.

I wear protective clothing for work can I claim?

Yes. If you need to wear protective clothing for work you can claim the same flat rate expense. The protective clothing doesn’t have to have a company logo on it.

How long does a claim take?

The normal time it takes is between 6-12 weeks, but this depends on the workload at the tax office which can vary during the tax year. We’ll track your claim to ensure it completes in the shortest time possible.

How much will I get back?

What you can get back depends on the type of claim you’re making. The more job expenses you have the more you can claim back. Tax Rebate Services has an average tax rebate of over £900, and can let you know what we would expect back for you when you apply. You’ll also get a small interest supplement added on from previous years.

How far back can I claim?

You can reclaim tax for the last four tax years.

Do I need to pay tax to be able to claim?

Yes. To be entitled you need to have paid tax in the years you are claiming.

Can I only claim for my current employer?

No. You can claim against tax paid at as many employers as you want.

I’ve claimed before, can I claim again?

Yes. But it’s best to check your tax code first because you may already be receiving the tax relief you are entitled to through your tax code.

Will I get a new tax code?

Yes. You will typically receive an adjusted tax code to reflect the expenses you have reclaimed, which will mean you’ll reduce the tax you pay in the future.

Do I already have an allowance giving me tax relief in my tax code?

It’s possible that you might already be getting the tax relief in your tax code. Some employers have agreed with the tax office to use flat rate allowances for employees with particular jobs. Our service can help clarify this for you by checking your tax code. This is important because it means you won’t waste your time trying to claim for something you have already received.

Does a claim affect my employer?

No. The claim involves only you and HMRC. A claim will not be made against your employer.
