How many of us read headlines like the BBC’s ‘British Gas scraps standard tariff for new customers’ and secretly thinks ‘I really should know what that means’? Even the most informed have to pause to consider which tariff they are referring to.
The energy sector uses its own language to describe its assorted energy plans and your bills. A further complication is that different companies often use the same words in a different order, so the resulting phrases can have multiple meanings. This muddle of terminology is what we untangle in our Energy Page.
Tax Rebate Services Money has a section devoted entirely to explaining your energy bill. The current three tariffs are clearly identified:
- Fixed Rate Tariffs
- Capped Tariffs
- Duel Fuel Tariffs
We tell you what they are and their potential benefits and pitfalls, so you can make an informed decision.
Energy price updates
We watch out for any changes in energy policy and big announcements from energy providers. Once the consequences are clear, we update you with the facts through the Energy Page. For example, we are keeping an eye on the fallout from British Gas’s revelation that they are getting rid of their Standard Variable Tariffs (SVTs) in April next year. Given that they are such a big player in the industry, it’s not at all surprising that both Scottish Power and E.On are already following suit. 67% of British Gas customers are currently on this tariff – that’s a lot of switchovers to process.
British Gas is owned by Centrica and their chief executive, Iain Conn said: “We have long advocated that the end of the Standard Variable Tariff is the best way to encourage customers to shop around for the best energy deal.” Their stated aim is to decrease the average energy bill.
As reported on BBC online, Uswitch.com’s Richard Neudegg responded to this with, “These initiatives by British Gas have the potential to effect positive change for its customers, if it makes it easier for them to make choices about their energy. However, what remains to be seen is if customers rolled onto a new fixed deal with British Gas end up finding themselves on another poor value standard tariff by another name.”
