Claim a Teacher Tax Rebate Today
Many teachers pay for a variety of work related items that they don’t even realise are within HMRC’s definition of ‘work expenses’.
This means that the tax paid on these work costs can be recouped through a Teacher Tax Rebate claim.
It includes things like Trade Union subscriptions, PE kit and using your own car. And not only can a teacher’s tax rebate be backdated for 4 years, but you’ll also end up with a new tax code lowering your tax bill for the rest of your working life.
What expenses are included in a teacher tax rebate?
Teachers can claim tax refunds on a number of different job expenses. The most frequently applicable expenses for our previous teacher clients are:
- Professional fees
Most professional organisations in the Education Sector, like the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), have an agreement allowing tax relief to be claimed. - Specialist clothing
On the cost of specialist clothing for example a PE teacher buying sports related clothing. - Using your car for work
If you use your own car other than normal commuting, like a senior teacher who supports a colleague in another school one day a week. - Use of your own home
Working from home (as stated in your contract of employment) or if you do any exam marking in addition to your main job.
How to claim your teacher tax rebate from HMRC
HMRC requires your teacher tax rebate claim to be submitted on either P87 expenses of employment form or on a self assessment tax return.
If you don’t complete a self assessment tax return for a reason other than work expenses you should send your claim to HMRC on a P87.
The P87 let’s you backdate your claim for four tax years and submission can be done online or by post.
For taxpayers who submit a self assessment tax return you should include your work expenses in the employment section of your tax return.
