Can I claim my tools on my tax return?
Yes, if you have to complete a tax return you must enter your tool expenses on your return.
Everybody knows that if you’re self employed you need to send a self assessment tax return. But you may also be required to do so if:
- You have spent more than £2500 in any one tax year on your tools (and toolboxes) and are paid through PAYE which is the case for many mechanics and auto technicians.
- You earn rental income through being a landlord.
- Annual income is over £100,000.
- Investment income is over £10,000.
- You are a Company Director.
Where on my tax return do I enter my tool expenses?
It all depends on whether you are employed under PAYE or self employed. If you are employed you must enter your tool expenses figure on your employment page.
If you have had more than one employer (in any one tax year) you must enter the amount you have spent on tools at each employer separately.
If you are self employed your accountant will use your tool receipts where necessary as part of your self employed expenses.
