Can I claim an NUT tax rebate?
The short answer is, “yes you can”.
If you’ve paid into the National Union of Teachers you can claim an NUT tax rebate. Tax relief is available on 66% of your annual NUT membership fees. A claim for your professional subscription can be made for the last four tax years and you can get a new tax code reducing the tax you will pay in the future.
NUT members can also claim for…
It’s not just about NUT fees, as a teacher you will almost certainly incur extra costs because of your work, many of which can be eligible for tax relief, for example:
- Buying and laundering ‘specialist’ clothing, such as sportswear for teaching PE
- Mileage if you need to use your own car to travel for work purposes
- Working from home (as part of your contractual duties)
Receipts and or records will be expected for most expenses for example a log of the locations you have travelled to for work reasons. If you haven’t in the past it’s a good idea to start keeping receipts and records so you can use these in any future claims you may want to make.
How do I claim my NUT tax rebate?
As a member of the NUT your claim has to be sent to the tax office (HMRC) either by post or by online submission. If you need it phone support is available from HMRC’s call centre most weeks from Monday to Saturday. It normally takes up to 12 weeks to get a reply in writing at which point you will find out if you are due a tax rebate.
