Uniform Tax Rebate FAQs
A uniform rebate is a refund of tax to cover the cost of washing and maintaining a uniform, or protective clothing, worn for work.
The tax office makes a uniform washing allowance (also known as a flat rate expense) available to help cover the cost of washing because it’s necessary for your job.
In most cases you need to reclaim what you are owed back, meaning you have to submit a claim to the tax office. In addition to laundry, other flat rate expenses exist for particular types of trades and professions which can be found in our flat rate expenses table.
Our uniform tax calculator is here to give you an estimation of what you could be owed.
You might already have the uniform allowance in your tax code because some employers and HMRC work together to include it in tax codes automatically.
