Union of Construction Allied Trades and Technicians members could be owed a tax rebate worth hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pounds.
A claim can be back dated for the last four years and can help you save tax in the future as well.
Unfortunately tax relief is not currently available on UCATT membership fees. But such an agreement could be negotiated by your Union in the future.
What you can claim back a tax rebate for depends on your own set of circumstances so it’s worth finding out what you could be eligible to claim for so you don’t miss out.
Wondering which of the many tax regulations apply to you? Read on to find out more.
What tax rebates can UCATT members claim back?
This is a list of some of the most common tax rebate claims filed by UCATT members;
- Travel that you need to do for work in your own private vehicle or public transport, not including a daily commute to a permanent workplace.
- Buying your own uniform or protective clothing.
- Laundering uniforms and protective clothing, where no facilities are provided by your employer.
- Buying tools and safety equipment for work.
- Journal subscriptions and professional body fees.
- Accommodation and subsistence costs for working away from home.
Even if you are paid some expenses by your employer a claim is still possible in many cases.
How many of these apply to you?
Whether you pay the Apprentice rate, Craft rate or General rate of UCATT membership, you probably pay for at least a couple of these work expenses out of your own pocket.
You are fully entitled to reclaim the tax on these expenses, but HMRC cannot automatically refund your money. You need to help them repay you by submitting an official claim.
It does not matter who your employer is; NHS, local authority, private sector, under Nations Working Rule Agreement or a government establishment.
This is a private communication between you and HMRC and your employer is not informed or liable for any tax rebate you are awarded.
About UCAAT
As the only Trade Union exclusively dedicated to the construction industry, UCATT keeps its campaigns focused on such issues as paid annual and public holidays, safety regulations being comprehensively adhered to and the rights of agency workers.
They also take care of their 80,000 strong members by fighting hard against blacklisting and for direct employment. As Health and Safety failures are actually life and death on construction sites, UCATT are also campaigning to change the law so that irresponsible company directors can be prosecuted for workers’ deaths that are caused by unsafe working conditions.
How do I claim a UCATT members tax rebate?
Members of UCATT should make a first claim on HMRC form P87 employment expenses or on a self assessment tax return if necessary.
You can use our tax relief for employment expenses guide to work out what you are entitled to claim back and how to submit your claim to the tax office (HMRC).
